Kris Swanson is an Assistant Chief in DOJ’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, Natural Resources Section. Kris joined the Section as a trial attorney in 2007 through the Division’s Honors Attorney program, and later served as a senior attorney. He has litigated numerous Indian lands cases, including suits alleging breaches of trust and defending Department of the Interior decisions to take land into trust on behalf of tribes. Among other things, Kris currently supervises the Section’s tribal trust docket, including cases brought under the Tucker Act, and cases involving decision-making by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs or Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs. Kris holds a J.D. and M.P.P. from George Washington University, and a B.A. in environmental studies from the University of San Diego.
